Feedshow's Dynamic OPML URL for widgets

DOWN ⇣

Feedshow, the online RSS feed reader, has one special feature I haven't noticed elsewhere, it uses an unique and constant OMPL file for each account, meaning the OPML URL you get when you export is dynamic! (You can't do this with Rojo, Bloglines, Newgater, MyFeedz nor NewsFarm I checked. )

Feedshow export

Each time you subscribe/unsubscribe, it'll show on the OPML file. Though I'm not sure it automatically updates or if you have to click on the export link once in a while.

Whatever, this is perfect to include in an OPML widget!

This is my Feedshow OPML as-is using the Optimal Widget.

Other solutions are Opod which expands each step, Grazr and the OPML blogroll widget for WordPress.

Plus, Feedshow, I like it more and more, saved me several times lately when I found myself on an old computer, all the new Web 2.0 apps using Ajax didn't work. The only problem is that it seems to have a maximum feed limit, above nothing shows up. Has anybody noticed this?

Are there any other online readers that can create dynamic OPML files?

Note: To edit OPML online there's also the OPML manager or Kosso's OPML manager, OPML workstation and ijot but if it's only for feed listing, Feedshow can be used and with preview! ;)

Hey, cool! I have been reading through your widget for the past 10 mintues!

Nice discovery!

It would be nice if rojo or other tools allowed you to do this...

Well BlogBridge may not exactly qualify as an online reader - its a Java app - but the OPML it generates is completely dynamic. That is, there's no need to do any kind of export each time you update your feed list. In fact, this is what Dave Winer calls "Reading List" support.

BTW, I'm an advisor to Grazr so thanks for the mention! :)

This is good news, the only other RSS Reader that I know of that has this is BlogBridge.

I keep my Reading List in OPML Workstation, which is annoying, because everytime I edit my Reading List in Rojo, I have to do the same in OPML Workstation.

Technorati favourites don't even have an OPML, but any topic from their blog directory has a unique OPML.

Ooops, I was wrong Technorati Favourites does have an OPML

...just tab Blogs from Favourites and there it is...and if you look it is a dynamic URL.

Lots of links, I know it will take a while reading, but I'd love your thoughts on some of the questions I ask in these posts:

My vote for OPML services goes to ijot OPML suite. Not for n00bs, the details are at the companion sites http://www.weboutliner.com/ - http://services.activerenderer.com/ - http://ijot.net/

Ahh! Thanks! That's cool to know! BlogBridge. I've got it but I didn't try.

JohnT,
I was expecting you would know more about it. Thanks I'll go though the links you've provided... BTW, what do you think is the best RSS search for reading old feeds? (Your pages are heavy.)

Anon: Sorry, The new blogger beta comments layout seems to have CSS 'overflow:none' and we can't see the end of the listed URLs. In case someone wants to see the links JohnT wrote. To view them you'll need to view the source. (It's easyer to view only the comments source by going though 'Add comment'.)

In OPML Workstation all of your OPML files (one, or a hundred, or more) are kept fresh as you edit them.

The OPML buttons supply fresh, up-to-the-last-save OPML to whatever application is reading the file.
Any targeting OPML-reading aggregator application, whether Optimal, grazr, blogbridge, etc. will have a fresh version when it loads a file updated at OPMLWorkstation.

The trouble with old-line aggregators is that they dynamically update RSS, but not the OPML that gathers the RSS. Bad.

My hope and expectation is that we will see a wild proliferation of aggregators that begin with the premise that OPML IS ALSO A FEED. And that as a matter of course one should dynamically pull in OPML feeds along with RSS feeds.

OPML Workstation is mainly for creating and hosting opml feeds. OPMLWorkstation provides writing, hosting, conditional access, etc. for a "write once--publish many" feed ecosystem.

So OPMLWorkstation codes direct links to Grazr, for example.

OPML workstation has an integrated one-click feed to the Grazr applet creator. I like Grazr a great deal because it seamlessly transits from opml to rss.

There is no way that OPMLWorkstation can keep up with the profusion of aggregators and readers out there. However, for the convenience of users and to allow rapid previewing of your work, OPMLWorkstation itself has a pretty decent built-in aggregator, which is called "browse" and is accessible from its editor and from the myfiles area as well as public files.

The OPMLWorkstation viewer is minimalist, but it works quickly and well. It shows OPML in trees, and with one-click it renders underlying RSS in a river-of-news format.

The RSS river-of-news pages, even more minimalist than the OPML trees, are good for scanning. Surprisingly good on mobile phone displays. The river-of-news pages are bookmarkable.

OPMLWorkstation also allows for direct play of audio files/podcasts, video, etc.

best, Jim Moore
